Who Relae is for
Relae is built for a specific shop: a Canadian arts or culture charity with one to five staff, where fundraising is one of several jobs somebody holds.
The shape of the organization
Section titled “The shape of the organization”You will recognise your own situation in most of this:
- Between one and five people work at the organization, and none of them has fundraising as their only job.
- Money arrives through four or more channels, and nobody has ever seen the combined picture.
- Somebody built a spreadsheet that works, and it now takes two days a year to reconcile.
- The board asks for a number, and producing it means an evening of cross-referencing.
- A handful of donors give most of the money, and you carry who they are in your head.
If that is close, Relae was designed around your constraints.
What we assume you have
Section titled “What we assume you have”- Gift data somewhere, in any shape. A spreadsheet, a CRM export, a stack of platform reports.
- Charitable status, if you want to issue receipts through Relae.
- A person who will own the workspace. One is enough.
What we do not assume
Section titled “What we do not assume”- That you have used a donor database before.
- That anyone on staff has fundraising training.
- That your data is tidy. Untidy data is the normal starting point, and the import is built for it.
- That you have a development plan, a case for support, or a moves-management process. The docs explain those as you meet them.
Where Relae fits less well
Section titled “Where Relae fits less well”Being straight about this saves you an evaluation:
- Large shops with several full-time officers. Relae supports a team, but the design centre is the one-person shop. A twelve-person development office will find it thin.
- Organizations wanting automated CRM sync. Data flows in from a CRM and back out through an export you run. Nothing writes back on its own, by design.
- Organizations outside Canada. Receipting follows Canada Revenue Agency rules, and data is stored in Canada. Other regions are handled case by case.
If you are a consultant
Section titled “If you are a consultant”Consultants working across several client organizations have their own setup, with separate workspaces per client and no shared donor pool between them. See working across multiple client organizations.
